Pont d'Eustis

#6 - Pont d'Eustis in Compton Station - July 12, 2009

Built in 1908, it is 90 feet long and crosses the Massawippi River. We were on our way to bring Emily and Jeremy to summer camp. To cut the 3-hour trip in half, we decided to have a picnic. So I checked the map and found 2 bridges along the way.

When we got to the road we found a sign saying "Covered Bridge 1Km" but it also said "Bridge closed"! It didn't say it was closed to cars on the website...We couldn't even get close to it with the truck because of the concrete blocks blocking the road.

So we grabbed our cooler and picnic blanket and walked the 1 Km path to the bridge. It is beautiful there! There is a lovely bike path, you can cross the bridge on foot and bike, and the river is pretty. We had a nice quiet picnic and were only interupted by a pair of Turkey Vultures. We then packed up and left to find the next bridge!

Pont de Powerscourt

#5 - Percy Bridge (or Pont de Powerscourt) in Hinchinbrooke - June 27, 2009

Built in 1861, this bridge is the oldest bridge still standing in Québec. It is 180 feet long and crosses la Rivière Chatauguay. It seems to have 2 names...the maps and websites say "Pont de Powerscourt" but it says "Percy Bridge" on the bridge itself.


We were camping in the area and I hadn`t planned on going to visit a bridge but it rained all morning and after playing cards and board games, we had lunch and Serge said, "Wasn`t there a covered bridge around here?" I didn`t have any information with me but I looked at the map to see if I could remember in what general area it was and there it was on the map! So we hopped into the car and drove off!


What it didn't say on the map was that it is closed for construction! So we jumped over the concrete blocks, propped my camera on one of them ( I didn't have my tri-pod!) and took a picture. I didn't let the kids explore here though...too dangerous!

During the summer the bridge was taken apart and is being put back together...I am hoping to go back and see it once it`s done!

Pont Leclerc

#4 - Pont Leclerc in LaSarre - June 29, 2008

We went to this bridge right after the Pont de la Calamité. Built in 1927, it is 81 feet long and crosses le Ruisseau Bouchard. We did not stay long here. This picture was taken just 5 minutes after the last bridge and I quickly took our family picture and a few others and then jumped into the car because there was thunder and lightening all around us! It started pouring as we left!

#3 - Pont de la Calamité in LaSarre - June 29, 2008

Built in 1927, it is 122 feet long and crosses la Rivère Des Méloizes. We visited when we went up to LaSarre to visit Serge's grandmother. There are many covered bridges in the area but we were a little too busy visiting with family to get to see more. When we talked about this one Juliette (Serge's mother) said that she used to cross this bridge often as it lead to her family's home when she was a child!

So when we decided to go out to see it we went with Gilles and Juliette, and she dragged Josée, Jean and their kids with us for a picnic! LOL I don`t think it was really their kinda thing but Juliette seemed happy that we were interested in her family land. We crossed it and went to visit where she grew up. The house burned down but there is still an old barn and some old farming equipment. It started to rain before we could have our picnic so we rushed back to Juliette`s sister`s house and ate there but went out to get this picture later in the afternoon, just the 5 of us. Then we kept going a few kms from there to the next one on the road.

Pont des Raymonds

#2 - Pont des Raymonds in Bécancour - April 19, 2008

We went to this bridge right after the bridge in St-Célestin. Built in 1928, it is 97 feet long and crosses la Rivière Blanche. It seems to go right through someone's back yard we weren't sure at first. We went past the house but then didn't go through the bridge with the car. When we crossed it we realized that a bike path starts on the other side. So another dead end!

The kids were very excited to see what looked like a river otter swimming in the river!

Pont Étienne-Poirier

#1 - Pont Étienne-Poirier in St-Celestin - April 19, 2008

We told the kids we were going on an adventure and set out to find 2 bridges. Built in 1905, this bridge is 81 feet long and crosses la Rivière Blanche. We had a hard time finding it, the map led us to a dead-end! The map is a few years old and highway 55 now cuts through the small country road. We crossed over to the other side of the highway and finally found it. It leads to a dead end of course but that's ok, there was no traffic!

We had a lovely spring day picnic on the banks of the river and explored under the bridge. Emily even found some old dog bones!
